Used Ram 1500 – Ennis, TX

Choosing a used truck is a great way to go easy on your budget, easy on the environment, and still get a vehicle that can put in a lot of work every single day. In particular, a used Ram 1500 is an ideal choice if you need to get a lot done, but you do not find yourself requiring the kind of power you might get from a 2500 or 3500HD truck. Of course, there are a lot of different Ram 1500s out there, so finding the right one is not always as easy as it seems.

In general, you should look for a newer model – even though it is used, the newer it is the more likely you are to find a lot of great options and upgrades on it. Newer used trucks are also less likely to have a lot of wear and tear on them, and they typically have less mileage. Of course, you should look for a vehicle history report whenever possible, and the best vehicles are going to come from a dealership that knows what to look for in a good used Ram 1500.

Here at Frank Kent CDJR in Ennis, TX, we pride ourselves on selling only the best pre-owned vehicles that meet the highest standards of quality and care. While a private seller might settle on a lower price, there is no security in such a purchase, and you will be out of luck if there is a problem with the truck. For peace of mind and ease of finding what you are looking for, you can’t beat Frank Kent CDJR.

The Ram 1500

Ram pickup trucks have a strong lineage going back decades, although the name “Dodge Ram” was first used back in the 1930s. The modern Ram 1500 is an evolution of the Ram trucks first introduced in the early 1980s, and over the years there have been many different generations and models to choose from. As such, finding a good used Ram 1500 is not too difficult, but that also means it might seem like you have too many to choose from. Settling on the right model year is a smart first step that can make it easier to find just the right Ram 1500.

Used Models to Look For

There have been four generations of Ram pickups over the last 40 years, with a fifth generation just getting started. While you might find some fifth-generation used Ram 1500s out there, in general, you will find older models. If you are a collector or have your eye on a classic, then you can choose an older generation, but usually, you will be best served with a fourth-generation model.

The fourth generation of Ram trucks started with model year 2009 pickups, including the 1500. Anything before 2009 is going to be the third generation or earlier, so you will not find a lot of modern niceties and technology on those models. 2009 to 2019 is a pretty long span of years for trucks, however, so narrow down your options to certain years to make it easier to shop for the right used Ram 1500 for you.

The 2009 Ram 1500

Since the fourth generation started in 2009, this is a great place to start when looking for the right Ram 1500. With the 2009 models, the ram 1500 received a lot of upgrades to make sure it stayed competitive and found a place for itself in the market. These include features like a new suspension, a more powerful HEMI engine option, and four-door cab styles. Having a Ram 1500 from the start of a generation can make it something of a collector’s piece, but keep in mind that later years added all sorts of improvements and upgrades.

The 2013 Ram 1500

If you do not want to go quite as far back as 2009, but still want an older used Ram 1500, then consider 2013 as an ideal year. The Ram 1500 received a minor overhaul in 2013 including some visual changes with the front fascia and options for halogen headlamps and LED turn signals. More efficient engines became available in 2013 so these Ram 1500s can come equipped with a lot of horsepower and torque to get your work done.

Changes in 2014 were generally pretty minor. If you like the options that were available in 2013, but you cannot find a model from that year, then consider this to be a great substitute. One of the biggest features that 2014 models have over their previous ones is the addition of an Eco-Diesel engine option starting that year.

The 2016 Ram 1500

Perhaps the biggest change in 2016 models was the addition of the Rebel trim level, which was designed as a more dedicated off-road option. If you want a used Ram 1500 to take off-road, then a 2016 Rebel is a great choice. It was designed with available off-road suspension, larger tires, and higher ride height. The 2016 Ram 1500 Rebel was available with either a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine or a 5.7L HEMI V8 engine, so keep that in mind as you look at different used models.

The 2018 Ram 1500

Most of the changes in 2017 were different options at the various trim levels so you will not find vast differences between it and 2016 models. In 2018, numerous improvements were added throughout the interior, such as the addition of HD radio to all 8-inch Infotainment systems, and 4G LTE wireless hotspot functionality. 2018 Ram 1500s also include support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with other tech improvements.

The 2019 Ram 1500s

If you want the most recent Ram 1500 possible, then consider a 2019 model that would have been initially sold much more recently. You will not get a huge price break going with a pickup this new, but it will still cost less than a brand new model. There are basically two different 2019 options to consider and look for when checking out used Ram 1500s.

The standard 2019 Ram 1500 is actually the start of the fifth generation of Ram pickups. There are numerous trim levels currently available, so check out different used models and look for incredible fuel economy thanks to a 5.7L eTorque engine. There is also an available V8 engine offering up to 12,750 lbs. of towing for truly incredible performance.

On the other hand, the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic is actually the end of the fourth generation and continues much of what has been so successful over the last decade. If you want a used Ram 1500 that takes advantage of everything the fourth generation had to offer, then a 2019 Classic model is a great choice. Keep this model in mind if you want a two-door cab pickup since only the Classic has that as an option among 2019 Ram 1500s.
